2009年の夏、スウェーデンのラップランドを訪れました。
そこで、壮大な自然の中に生きるトナカイとサーミ族の女性に出会いました。
自然の恵みから素材を得て、先祖代々作られてきたもの。
サーミの人々の作り出すものは装飾的でもあり、美しくそのものにゆるがない強い存在感があります。

それは、この北の地で見た人々の生き方、もののあり方に接したことから生まれた、装飾的であり、自然への賛美と共にある暮らしの中のものづくりです。
When I went to Lappland, I was impressed to see how they lived with nature. I noticed that everything around us came from nature. It was an experience to see one of origin of our life. I could feel that people were also part of the nature.
They make everyting around them with material from nature and they decorate on them. Sometimes the color and design came from their family tradition.
There are strong aliveness in their things.
I wish I can have those aliveness and I hope I can conect with people through my work in this way.

~making story~ ブランケットができるまで
エーランド島での生活も2年目を迎えた頃、羊の毛を求め、友人と共に近辺の羊農家をめぐりました。
そしてとてもお世話になったのは近くに住んでいたグニッラ。
羊のことについては独学らしいのだが、羊の毛の種類、性質、洗い方、紡ぎ、織や編みまで何でも知っているグニッラ。私たちの羊先生でした。
グニッラに誘われて羊500匹を飼っているヨンテのところで行われた毛刈りを見に行ったりもしました。
そこに来ていたのはオーストラリアから来たプロの毛刈り屋！まるでロックンロールのような手つきで次々に羊が裸にされていくのです。ツアーのごとく羊の毛を刈りに世界中を回っているのだそうです。
そんなこんなで羊の毛はその年の私たちのメイン素材となったのです。

刈りたての羊の毛・・・それは、草や、ふん、虫やらがくっついていてワイルド。
そういうものを取り除きつつ、体の場所によって毛の性質もちがうので、使えないところをのぞき、ほぐしていきます。
興味深いのは1匹1匹毛質や色が異なっていること。
それだから何年やっても学ぶことばかりで全くあきやしないわと グニッラは言います。
重労働なのですがそんなことは全く苦にならないくらい、毛のくるくるしたカールやあたたかさ、フワフワ・・・羊からのいただきものは触れるごとに愛おしいのです。
This year we got a contact with sheep farm in Karlevi and had an opportunity to see cutting sheep hair. Those became main material.
Washing flesh wool is quite a lot of works. They have much dirty like pooh,dirt,grass,straw and so on…
Hair quality is different by the part of the body and also every sheeps have different quality.
During the work I feel how soft and warm they are and how curly those are. Eventhough it is hard work but to touch sheep’s hair is loving moment.
すべて自然と共にある生活の中から生みだすこのプロジェクト。 色はワークショップの目の前にあるクルミの木と近くの農家の方からもらった玉ねぎの皮で植物染めをすることにしました。
植物染めは染めてみないとわからないところがあって、思い通りにいかないけれど、またそれだからおもしろいとも言えます。まだまだ私の経験が浅いところもあるのでしょうが、それでもやはり自然から得た色の発色は、その中に深みがありとても魅力的。
また大きな鍋でぐつぐつと植物を煮込んでいると、おいしそうなにおいが漂ってきたりします。何色に染まるだろうとかき混ぜながら待っている時間も植物染めの魅力の１つだと思います。

In this project everything is made by nature beside ourlife. So I also used natural material to dye. I chose Walnuts tree which is standing in front of the workshop and onion peals which I got from farm near my house. Natural dying is difficult to adjust color but I know that I can get the deep nature color. When I boil the materials in a big pot, it comes good smell.Time to wait to see what color I will get is also special moment.
織りについて考えるときも、織の本をめくっていても、つい模様が気になってしまいます。 そんな私に、先生が「あなた、きっと気に入るからこの技法試してみたら？」と出してきてくれたのが、私が住んでいた周辺の地方、スモーランドに伝わるスモーランド織。
既存の織り機をちょっと改造して行います。
そしてもう1つはいろいろ試行錯誤をした結果、やはり羊らしさをそのまま伝えたいと考え、紡いだ毛とそのままの毛を組み合わせて織りました。また、手紡ぎの持つやわらかい素朴な糸の風合いを感じられるよう、ニット風のテクスチャーも織りこんでみました。
技法 ： スモーランド織
tecnique : smålands weaving
I always liked patterns and I had an interest about how to organize the patterns on the weaving. At that time my teacher suggested me to try one tecnique called `smålands weaving’. Småland is the nejghboring area where I lived. It suited to my project very well.
In the other side, I wanted to remain the texture of sheeps. I spun by my hands and used curly hair and also made texture which looks like knitted surface.
